Leash Training a Bulldog Puppy
Have you ever watched other people walk their dog? It usually is the dog walking the person. The dog wants to be the leader. By allowing the dog to pull and tug at you this is teaching them they are in control. By learning the correct way to leash train your bulldog will help control the stubbornness they are famous for. Your bulldog should never walk in front of you. He should always be at your side or behind you. This is an important lesson for your dog, even if you want your dog to be a protector or guardian. They should know from the beginning that you are in control.
They puppy will eventually learn to read your body language and respond accordingly. Use your training collar only after you have your puppy use to his new leash and collar. By allowing him to wear it around the home or yard he will get use to it. Then the real training begins. Place your puppy by your side and command by saying heel. His shoulder should never go past your leg. Always hold the leash long and slack unless you are trying to correct the bulldog. If the puppy tries to pass you immediately snap the leash towards your leg and correct him with a forceful command. “TCHT” or “BAH” will work, and then loosen the leash again. Make sure this is in one quick motion. You can learn to read your puppy’s body language and if his head is in a low relaxed position with his tail swinging low than he is learning. Again make the training sessions no more than 10 minutes at a time. Patience is the key to all bulldog training.
